2011/12 Season

The first training session of the 2011/12 season will take place at Surrey Sports Park on Saturday 22nd October, from 1000-1300.

This session will be followed by an AGM.

Players of any ability are encouraged to attend this session, with opportunities for both GU1 and 2, as we enter GU’s third season in existence, pushing on from last year’s Top 10 Mixed Tour finish, and 4th placing at Mixed Nationals. (Not to mention 5th at Mixed Indoor Nationals!)

Summer Pick Up!

Summer evenings = more daylight = more ultimate.

Last summer pick-up was really popular. We regularly had 7v7 and a few times had 20+ people.
So, 6:30pm on Natwest field. Different location from last year, a bit more central, more car parking (its free after 6pm on campus) and slightly closer to a bar for a post game drink.
Here’s a map:
No one likes playing in the rain, so if it is raining at 6pm in Guildford, assume pick up is cancelled.
Remember light and dark shirts, water and a disc.

GU 1 Dominate UKU Mixed Nationals!

GU 1 caused a storm at Mixed Tour 1 (Nationals) finishing 4th and  smashing the seasons aim to ‘try and break into the top 16′.

Starting off seeded 21st, they dominated their pool games winning 11-3, 11-2 and 11-4 against Peeps, Curve and Shakedown respectively before losing 11-5 to Herd 1 and winning 11-3 against Scarecrows to take 5th seed and a minumum finish of 8th home on Saturday!

Sunday: GU win their quarter final 10-7 against Flump for a guaranteed spot in the top 4.

Semi-final: GU lose 11-7 to DED in a hard fight for a spot in the final.

3v4 final: GU rematch against Herd and lose 12-9 after some very long, tough points finishing the weekend in 4th place.

A fantastic weekend- lets keep it up GU!

GU at London Winter League

Guildford Ultimate made their debut appearance at London Winter League 2 on the 12th December 2010.

We beat Cutty Sharks and Choke Hazard, but narrowly lost to Chichester, to finish second in Division Two.

Continuing our fear of odd-numbered winter leagues, we will be returning for LWL4 in January.

New Committee

Apologies all for the late publishing of this!

GU’s first AGM as Guildford Ultimate took place in October (the previous AGM having been under the guise of “Lucky Huckers”, deciding to become Guildford!). With a great turnout of around 25 people, our new committee was voted in.

Outgoing committee:
Chair: Dave Halls
Treasurer: Tom Pierce
Mixed Captains: Jon Pugh/Daisy Seal/James Rodgers
Open Captains: Jon Francombe
Social Engagements Coordinator: James Rodgers

2010/11 Committee:
Chairman: Dave Halls
Treasurer: David “Sparky” Sparks
Mixed Captains: Jon Pugh/Daisy Seal
Open Captains: ===UNELECTED===
Coach: Stewart Fudge
Kit Secretaries: Eve Tandoi/Tarryn Chalmers
Youth Liaison: Joe Wyatt

The club ended the 2009/10 season in profit by £30.

The committee will elect a suitable candidate for Open Captain in January 2011. Anyone interested should contact Dave.

2010/11 Aims:

Mixed Tour:
GU1: Commence phase two of “Operation National Domination”, building on our top 20 finish in the UK in our debut season, aiming to break into ‘A Tour’ in 2011.
GU2: Continue to provide competitive Ultimate for those not in GU1. GU2 will aim to improve on their final 2010 finish, by moving into the next bracket up. This is considered a realistic, yet optimistic aim. GU2 will continue to act as a developmental side for GU1.

Open Tour:
GU: Continue to be a reasonably competitive C Tour side.

Continue our strong link with the Surrey Scorpions, in Guildford. It was agreed that with the Chairman of Guildford also Chairing Surrey, the relationship between the two clubs would be increased further.

Upon ending Lucky Huckers and becoming Guildford Ultimate, the club ethos was agreed that we would continue to provide competitive Ultimate for players of any ability within the Guildford & Surrey area. We will be focussed upon the UKU Mixed Tour, with a target of establishing Guildford as one of the best clubs in the country within 3 years; as well as becoming recognised as a large enough and strong enough club to also field a competitive second team, thus providing opportunities for all levels. Additionally, the club will also provide a medium for players to enter the UKU Open Tour, but without any specific competitive aims. The club will also aim to expand knowledge and participation of Ultimate within the local area, by providing regular sessions at local schools.

It was agreed, that the club has far exceeded initial expectations of the level of progress to be achieved within year 1 of the three year plan; and that year two is one to very much be looked forward to.

1-2-GU!
